Pretoria has been South Africa's administrative capital since the Union of South Africa was founded by the British and Boers after the Anglo Boer War in 1902. Taken over by the Boer Nationalist Party, which introduced apartheid, in 1948.
Today the capital is home to the democratically elected government of the new South Africa.
The present and the past goverment occupied the same magnificent Union Buildings, built after the Angle Boer War, and designed by the famous Sir Herbert Baker.
Pretoria is also known for its natural beauty, with broad avenues lines with blossoming Jacaranda trees, giving it the nickname Jacaranda City.
The city has a rich tapestry of living history, reflecting the country's emergence from colonialism.
